Guest Post: Debt Free Story

January 16, 2017

Today, I have a guest post featured on Centsibly Rich.  Here’s a snippet, but please click on over to read my Debt Free Story.

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up in Northern Virginia about 30 minutes outside of DC and have never lived anywhere but Virginia.  I didn’t even leave the state for college.  With that said, I am super close to my family and extended family, all of whom live within a 20 minute drive of my house.  My wife and I actually lived 7 houses down from each other for many years but didn’t know each other.

I am one of the biggest investment/financial nerds that I know, and it wasn’t until I joined the PF community that I found like minds.  My wife was incredibly thankful as I finally had an outlet to connect with others about my passion.  I seriously have a one-track mind and could talk with friends, family, or even strangers about this stuff for hours.  More time is spent discussing finances on my breaks than actually eating my lunch.  But, it’s totally worth it to share my passion with people.

I first developed my love for investing my senior year of high school when I took a computer class, where we tracked investments and used that data to build the financial models.  Learning about investments just before the tech bubble also helped as the stock market seemed like a magical place where stocks only went up…

Great post! I feel like there are so many people out there that have little freedom because they’ve limited their options due to being tied to debt, especially huge mortgage debt.
We nearly paid off our mortgage, but my husband decided what he really wanted was a home on the lake, so we ended up shifting goals. I can definitely see how we’ve limited our choices by taking on this debt, but he loves his job and has no plans to retire before normal retirement age. Hopefully that continues!

      Thanks for stopping by!!!

If I could live down at the beach with a job that I love I think I might reconsider having a mortgage 🙂

So I definitely know the allure.

I’m doing something similar to what you did. Having roommates subsidize your living expenses is amazing; it is even better if you are lobbing additional principal towards your debt like you have!

What are your thoughts on my situation? I have a 2.625% rate on a 5/1 ARM. I’m not doing any prepayments due to a low rate. Do you think it might be best to wait until the rate reset to put more cash in?

Thanks for stopping by Erik!!! I hate to answer a question with a question but I think it depends on what you’re looking for.

Historically the stock market has beaten the 2.625% rate that you are currently paying.

However, I think it’s based on your risk tolerance and how comfortable you are with debt.

For me I hate debt and after awhile I couldn’t stand my mortgage. So I think part of it is what helps you sleep at night.

Would you feel distraught if the market went up a bunch and you missed out on the gains or would you feel good knowing that your mortgage was paid off?
