Resolve to Exercise and Make More Money

exercise-make-moneyJanuary is right around the corner.  When January 1st hits, gym owners will see dollar signs as their gyms fill up with New Year’s Resolution folks, trying to work off the excess pounds they gained over the year(s).

 

As anyone that has made it to February knows, some of those gym members will start to thin out, and the treadmills will soon become available again.  Another New Year’s resolution broken.  However, research shows that your weight may have a direct impact on your paycheck.

 

Looks Can Be Deceiving

If you saw me, you’d think I was in decent shape.  Clothes can cover up a lot.  I am the definition of “skinny fat”, or as Tony Horton likes to say, “loose in the cage.”  I know that I need to improve my fitness level.  Here’s the crazy thing.  At work, they allow me to work out three days a week for an hour, and I’m still not in the shape I’d like to be.  

 

P90X

exercise-make-moneyI take advantage of this hour, but I’ll freely admit, I don’t push myself nearly as hard as I should.  In all my time going to the gym over the years, the only time I really pushed myself is when I did P90X.  

 

It’s a great workout, if you’ve never tried it.  It’s so easy– you pop in the DVD and hit play.  Following along is pretty straightforward.  But, I’m the type that gets bored of workouts easily.  And when I get bored, I tend to start slacking.

 

Crossfit

exercise-make-moneyI have also tried Crossfit.  While I really enjoyed my 2 month trial, I stunk at it.  I had terrible form, and as much as I tried, I could not figure out for the life of me how to deadlift properly.  On top of that, my wife was attending Crossfit classes with me, and she wasn’t a huge fan of the heavy emphasis on lifting.

 

For those that don’t know my wife, she doesn’t need motivation from someone else to push herself.  I, on the other hand, need someone to encourage me.  So, when the Crossfit coach got in her face attempting to push her harder, she had had enough.

 

exercise-make-moneyAdditionally, I injured my knee shortly after that incident when doing some plyometrics on some unstable tires at the gym.  For the record, I have had two surgeries on my left knee, once to repair the ACL and then a second time to clean up a meniscus tear.  When I saw the doctor to discuss my options, he said that Crossfit would most likely continue to deteriorate my knees and suggested that I find something a little less intense.

 

My Current Workout Regime

So for the past couple of years, I have been walking at an incline on the treadmill for cardio, which is low impact on my knees, and lifting weights.  I have plateaued, mainly because I don’t push myself.  As a result, I have gained a few pounds.  While by no means would you consider me overweight, I could stand to convert some of this fat into muscle.

 

On Saturday, I tried something new.  I attended a boot camp.  This boot camp was running a Groupon, and the class was 40% off.  It would cost me $1 a day if I went everyday for an hour.  Not a bad form of “entertainment” if you ask me 🙂

 

exercise-make-moneyA friend of mine actually first introduced me to this class.  For months, I considered taking it, but the timing didn’t work out with my schedule.  I think I was also scared to do it since I knew I was out of shape.  Excuses, excuses, excuses…

 

Well, I bucked up and bought the Groupon!  I am off for the next two weeks until Christmas.  I don’t have anything that is pressing at home.  No more excuses.  

 

I have to admit though, I get really nervous when I enter new situations.  I showed up 25 minutes early to my class as they had another class before.  I watched how it was done and started to relax as I thought, “Okay, this is doable.”  

 

No Pain, No Gain

exercise-make-moneyFinally, 9 am came.  I jumped onto the field and started to warm up with the group.  I thought, “Man, I’m doing way better than I thought I would during this warm up.  I got this.”  I shouldn’t have been so cocky.  I finished dead last during the workout.  I was sucking air like I had run a marathon, and my legs felt like rubber.  Walking down the steps of the gym was excruciating.  While I was walking out, a woman in my class said to me, “Don’t worry honey; I was where you are, and now I’m in the best shape of my life.”

 

So what does exercise have to do with finances?  Plenty!!!

 

Exercise and Finances

According to the Journal of Labor Research, people that exercise earn 9% more than their couch potato counterparts.  Researcher Vasilios Kosteas, Ph.D., an economics professor at Cleveland State University, found that men who exercise on average earn 6% more, and women on average make 10% more.

 

exercise-make-moneyThe study defined exercise as aerobics, cycling, running and swimming, but as many of you know, weight training has been shown to offer many of the same benefits.

 

Smart, Happy, and Energetic

Kosteas also concluded that exercise increases your intelligence, positive attitude, and energy levels.  “Each of these factors in turn can raise a person’s productivity, leading to higher earnings,” Kosteas explained.

 

It’s not just Dr. Kosteas that believes this.  Finnish researchers studied 2,500 twins and found that the twin that exercised on a regular basis earned more money than their sedentary twin.

 

Persistence

exercise-make-moneyAri Hyytinen, Ph.D., asserted, “Physically active people may also be more persistent; they persevere in the face of work-related tasks and hurdles,” and “increase their desire to partake in competitive situations.”

 

At Work and Healthier

Another reason people who regularly exercise may achieve more financial success is that they’re present and available to work.  Physical fitness builds up your body’s immunity system, which means that you are less likely to miss work.

 

Vera Gibbons said, “Research shows healthy people miss fewer days, are more productive, more motivated, make more money and stay in the workforce longer,” she said. “Interestingly enough, it actually works the other way, too. People who suffer from financial stresses, in fact, two out of five save they suffer from ulcers, headaches, sleep disorders, physical ailments.”

 

When to Workout

exercise-make-moneyUniversity of Bristol researchers found that employees who exercised before going to work, or during lunch breaks, were better prepared for the workday.  The study also determined that these employees were able to concentrate longer at work with unscheduled breaks, which led to these individuals finishing work in a timely manner.  And of course, people that hit deadlines and are dependable are more likely to rise up the ranks and receive a raise or promotion.  

 

Executive Status

exercise-make-moneyIn the book, Self-Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence, authors Christopher P. Neck, Charles C. Manz, and Jeffery D. Houghton found that many executives do prioritize physical fitness.  They used a survey by TheLadder.com that revealed that 75% of respondents agreed that fitness was “critical for career success at the executive level,” and 75% believed that being overweight was a “serious career impediment.”

  1. I recently restarted my workouts. For the last year or so the kids have just run me too ragged. It’s needed too. Historically I’ve been an athlete but a year of doing nothing has caught up. I’m doing my old regimen again, albeit at half pace and 2x a week. Like you I have to work my way back up. Persistence like in everything else is key.

    • I started my workout on Saturday and I feel like I am a mummy walking two days afterwards.

      I wanted to go today but I’m still sore just trying to sit down in a chair. I guess that’s what happens when it feels like I did a million lunges with weights.

      So I’m going to give it another day and go back tomorrow, hopefully 🙂

      I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one that was once athletic but have had a bit of a layoff recently.

  2. I love P90X! I did a few rounds of it several years ago. I heard some statistic that 90% of the people who start it don’t make it all the way through. No idea if that is true or not, but it motivated me to not miss a single day. I don’t work out nearly as hard now. My company pays for a gym membership just a few minutes away from work, so I try to go over lunch so that I have my evenings open. I’m not looking forward to the new year’s resolution rush coming up in the next month.

    I had a terrible cough for over a month that I’m just now finally getting over. I didn’t want to be hacking all over all the gym equipment and everyone else so I haven’t been going to the gym lately. Now I need to get my butt back in gear and start going again!

    Love all the stats about how exercising can make your wallet fatter! I think you get a lot of motivation if you have a workout buddy. Just having someone go with you can be a real kick in the ass 🙂

    Have you (of your wife) tried yoga? I actually love it and all the breathing exercises are good for reducing my stress.

    I’m dreading to see the January gym rush. I just don’t like waiting 15 mins+ to use equipment at the gym haha.

    • Hi Andrew – Ever since I got married I’ve had a harder time finding friends available to lift after work with.

      It’s probably due to the fact that most of my friends live further out now and don’t want to spend too much time from their families.

  4. Thank you for sharing this! I have really been putting off working out for the past few months, I really needed to read this today.

    I used to do P90x and Insanity workout videos for years, and it really does get repetitive. I can basically do most of the videos without looking at what they are doing, which is good because I can listen to music while I do it.

    Working out is also a great way to have fun for little to no cost, plus the health benefits will save you money in the long run as well. Thanks again for this post, I am going to put my running shoes on now.

  5. Exercise is soooo important for general prosperity. You can have all the money in the bank, but if you don’t have your health and vitality, what’s it all really worth?

    I hurt my knee earlier this year and I have had to give up my favorite thing which is sprinting. Now, like you, I will walk on the treadmill at the highest incline or run up stairs or a hill, which doesn’t put too much pressure, but the injury has definitely caused frustration and a less than ideal situation. Since I only work part time, I’m trying to do the treadmill in the morning, on a fasted state, before I eat anything. That has really made a difference in the past.

    • Thanks for sharing Primal!!! I too love sprinting. I am not one of those people that love to go on long runs for hours. For whatever reason I love to sprint back and forth until I pass out and then I’m done.

      Walking at an incline on treadmill is definitely less than ideal but if you’re like me, you do what you gotta do until you’re better.

  6. I definitely am not exercising enough. I’m sure that if I did that it would translate into an increase in my energy level which could increase my productivity at work. Since our bonuses are partly based on our productivity, I could theoretically earn more from exercising more. Maybe next year (that’s what everyone says). For now, I’m relying on an alternate source of energy… coffee. 🙂

  7. I need to get back on the wagon myself. I feel I’ve been slacking lately, exercising once maybe twice a week. It has been hard to find the time, partly due to starting my own blog earlier in the year and the time commitment that requires (excuses, excuses…).

    My goal is to finish the year strong, continuing to exercise and then to step on the gas in the beginning of the year and make a few new goals for myself. Here’s to it!

  8. Interesting connection!

    I go to the gym at 9pm in January to avoid the crowds. By February, it’s back to normal levels. My husband and I have set days we both go to the gym, which makes it feel like less of a choice, plus there’s the accountability factor. We also attend taekwondo classes twice a week, which is great for flexibility.

    I have knee issues as well (meniscus) – and have found the elliptical to be easiest on the knee (as long as I don’t set the incline too high for too long!).

    • That’s so cool that you and your husband participate in Taekwondo. I grew up doing Taekwondo and I attribute a lot of my success in baseball to the flexibility I got from Taekwondo. Looking back I wish I had stuck with it. Hopefully when my son is older we can do it together.

  9. I just recently got back into exercising. Perhaps if I had done more exercise when I was younger, I could have avoided my health problems and saved a ton of money that way. But I can only change what happens now, and I’m trying to keep a regular exercise habit to improve my health. Although I’m retired, I definitely can see how exercise might affect your paycheck. The “fat people are lazy” myth is a prevalent one, and I’m sure that’s part of the considerations come promotion time.

  10. Did Kickboxing for 2-3 weeks. $150/mth. Was intending to do it for 3 months, burn up the rest of the fitness subsidy, and then hit the mountains once the snow melted, but alas I have already fallen off the schedule.
    I often associate losing weight akin to reducing debt. Same principals really.

    • You are absolutely correct. They are definitely linked, I even wrote a post about it in October. It’s definitely not easy but when you get moving in the right direction it’s definitely easier.

  11. I am definitely not a natural exerciser. I prefer to read in my house rather than go out and exercise. The last few years after my youngest was born I’ve been having trouble finding the time to get out and exercise. My oldest is going to work on his hiking merit badge for scouts, which involves multiple 10 mile hikes and a 20 mile – I’m hoping to start getting ready for that with him soon!

  12. We are really on the same page, I just posted about the importance of exercise as well! My family makes it a priority because as we talked about before, without good health you really have nothing. Certainly I have noticed a decrease in happiness and being easily aggravated at work when I am not in a good workout routine. Exercise is vital for mental health in my opinion! Take care sir.

  13. I hired a trainer in the fall of 2105 and it made all the difference.

    Yes, it’s kind of pricey, but would you rather give $1,500 to a trainer or $1,500 (or more) to a doctor?

    I’ve now gone from meeting with him once a week to meeting once every other month (as I now have so many routines we’ve done together) so it’s much more affordable.

    And I’ve gone from 28% body fat to 16%. Wish I would have done it 20 years ago.

  14. Good for you for stepping it up!! I’m turning 50 next summer and it’s got me thinking much more seriously about my physical health. People say I look pretty good for my age, but I can feel the flab and I hate it. And I don’t want to look “pretty good”, I want to kick fifty’s tail!! I’m starting by being really good this holiday season food intake wise and making sure I keep up with my daily stretching and weight lifting stuff. But come spring I’m going to kick it into high gear.

    Interesting about the increase in pay levels for the physically fit. I think being physically fit increases confidence and that shows in work performance which might lead to the higher pay.

  15. I’ve been an avid exerciser my whole life, but recently have been slacking as well (down to 3-4 times/week). It’s so easy to find yourself slacking during the holidays. especially with all the tasty treats out there! When I’m on my normal workout routine I am more productive, have more energy, improved self esteem, and sleep like a baby. It keeps me sharp and focused so I can do better at work, and also have more energy for my new blog (which is time consuming!).

    • I have to say this bootcamp that I am doing is kicking me butt. I am exhausted and can not wait to go to bed now.

      I wish I could sleep in now that I’m officially on vacation. Unfortunately my son likes to wake up at 7 am EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

      So I am a bit groggy right now, but hopefully once my body gets use to it the workouts I’ll be feeling really good again 🙂

  16. I definitely notice exercising and getting in better shape improves my mood, and helps me keep sharper and more motivated in general. I also do mostly weight training. I’ve found it gives the most bang for the buck if you want to keep weight off and stay in shape. These days I try and get to the gym in the every morning. Now the only problem I have is eating enough 🙂

  17. So… when i exercise more often, I will become healthier, smarter and will be earning more money… Sign me up 😉

    I have followed yoga classes for the past 12 weeks via my work, which I really enjoyed (much more than expected). Also I try to work out at home using weights and following HIIIT trainings. Besides sports I firmly believe that healthy eating habits are just as important to becoming fitter, feeling happier and focused and reducing stress.

    I’ve always found the gym boring myself, those treadmill miles feel way too much like real life… running fast just to remain in the same place!

    Eventually my middle-aged-crisis denial kicked in and I figured I could do a half marathon in the same sort of time frame I remember being able to achieve 20 years ago. I was wrong. In fact that is where the Slow Dad nickname came from, my son came to meet me at the finish line and had to wait… and wait… and wait until I eventually managed to “Slow Dad shuffle” across the line!

    Definitely agree about the link between exercise and earnings, getting the blood pumping certainly helps with motivation.

      I’m in the 2nd week of my boot camp and I finally wasn’t the last person to complete a drill. Which made me think I’m finally improving or maybe it’s that persons first week 🙂

      Either way I am definitely enjoying the workout and hopefully I will see some correlation between earnings and exercise 🙂

  19. As I get older, I definitely put a higher priority on my health. Not so much that I want to make more money, but it’s about my quality of life. For most of my life, I had been quite healthy. Until the beginning of this year, I suddenly have plantar fascias and I would have pain in my feet and ankle. The quality of my life just hit rock bottom as I couldn’t stand longer than 5 minites without getting pain in my ankle. Fortunately, I found feet massage therapy recently and was able to recover to about 50%. So the moral of the story is, stay active and be healthy and don’t let father time come sooner than it should.

  20. I cant imagine doing crossfit challenges.. I tried once when watching video in youtube and decided not to do it again. I’ll better do something thats not so harsh..
